What to Do if You See a Bat Outside Your House

Bats are around here are very tiny, so they can fit into the smallest openings or gaps in a house or building. In fact, a hole as small as 3/8ths of an inch is all they need to gain access into roofs, attics, crawl spaces, sheds, garages, and more. Additionally, bats are attracted to areas that have a lot of trees and bodies of water. Properties that also fit these descriptions are more prone to nightly bat activity, making bat sightings more prevalent that one would believe.

If you happen to come across a bat outside on your property, there are some specific rules to follow in order to protect yourself and the bat. Continue reading to learn what you should do if you ever see a bat outside.

Flying Bats

If you see a bat on the outside of your property, your next step depends on the where it is, what it is doing, and its age. When you see bats flying around your property at night, you don’t need to take any immediate action except to ensure your windows and doors are closed. However, if the bat activity persists or becomes worse, it is wise to contact a Louisville bat control company to have your home or building inspected for vulnerabilities. They have the permits, equipment, and skills to provide full-property inspections and give professional advice on how to protect your home from bat infestations.

Baby Bats

When you find a baby bat laying on the ground, or by itself attached to a beam or branch, do not touch it and immediately go the other direction. It may seem like the baby is abandoned by its mother, but is probably isn’t. Chance are, it fell out of the nest, or the mother dropped it mid-flight. In both scenarios, the mother is likely to come back for the baby within 24 hours.

If the baby bat is blatantly injured, it is important to let nature take its course. Remember, that bat could be food or fertilizer for other living organisms in nature. If the injured bat is in an area of your property that is often occupied or used, you cannot wait for nature to take its course; instead, contact a Louisville bat control company for licensed bat removal service.

Bat on the Ground

Unless it is June or July, a bat found on the ground is likely an adult. If you see an adult bat on the ground, especially during daytime, it could be injured, ill, or just really old and close to death. Bats are known to isolate themselves when they are dying. Furthermore, if the bat is behaving erratically, or seems confused, it could be a sign of Rabies.

Are Bat Mites and Bed Bugs the Same?

People all across the country have experienced a bug infestation of some kind. Whether its mosquitoes, ants, gnats, or fleas, we have all been there at least once in our lives. Out of all of the insects that we encounter in our lifetime, bat mites are one we would commonly overlook. No one ever talks about bat mites, mostly because they are often times mistaken for bed bugs

Continue below to learn the similarities and differences between the two insects, as well as, how to permanently get rid of bat mites in your home.

A typical bat mite.

Bed Bugs Versus Bat Mites

Most people have heard stories of bed bug infestations, and many have even experienced it for themselves. The usual signs include itching, red bumps and bites, and minuscule bugs in your linens and bed sheets. To get rid of them, people have used exterminators, aerosol sprays, and insecticide treatments to kill and remove the “bed bug” problem.  What some find, is that the infestation eventually comes back.

This is most likely because they treatment administered wasn’t strong enough, or the infestation isn’t bed bugs at all, its bat mites. Bat mites behave very similar to bed bugs. They are tiny parasitic insects that cling to a host and can live up to one year if the climate is agreeable. They live sustainably in dark and narrow areas, just like bats, which is why bats are their favorite hosts.

How to Get Rid of Bat Mites

⚠ No matter how many times your house is fumigated, disinfected, and treated, BAT MITES WILL NEVER GO AWAY unless you get rid of the bats, first!

Standard extermination services are not the correct treatment for bat mites. So long as their host remains, bat mites will continue to breed and reproduce at an exponential rates. Once the bat colonies are cleared from the area and proper preventative maintenance is implemented to ensure there will be no more future bat break-ins, you are on your way to a pest-free living space. This is when you can begin to properly clean and sanitize the area for bat mites. Keep in mind that bats can also carry and transmit fleas, lice, and ticks.

There are certain qualities to consider when searching for a dependable and honest bat removal and control company in your town, including credentials, amenities, and of course, local reputation. Such qualities can be an excellent indication of the integrity and reliability of the business.

The next quality to look for is experience. Be sure to inquire about a company or contractor’s experience in the field. A novice might make some rookie mistakes that cost you in the end.

Next, consider asking about their fleet equipment and methods they use to execute their services. It is important to know what kind of machines and tools will be used inside your home, as well as, how equipped they are to even do the job correctly. This is information you have every right to know before giving your money away.

Do Bats Live Near My House?

Are you concerned about nuisance bats? If so, there are plenty of precautions you can take to protect your assets from animal damage, as well as your loved ones from exposure to infectious diseases and injuries. But first, assess whether or not bats are actually a threat in your area. Chances are, there are local bat populations that exist within your community; however, whether or not they will actually affect your home or property largely depends on your environmental surroundings.

Environmental Factors

As mentioned, whether or not bats are indeed a possible threat depends on certain factors, namely environmental ones. You see, here in Kentucky, bats are insectivores, which means they eat a diet of insects, mostly flying sorts like gnats, flies, moths, and of course, mosquitoes. They also eat termites, beetles, and several others types of insects, but the flying bugs will easily give away a bat’s location.

Why? Well these insects typically group together in large swarms, which are very visible during dusk. And where do these bugs like to fly? Around water, like streams, creeks, ponds, lakes, and rivers. So if your home is located near a body of water such as these, you can be sure there are bats living nearby that eat up all the swarming insects each night.

To see for yourself, go outside right before the sun sets, when the light is still bright, but receding. Then look above an area of water for a swarm of insects. Be patient, and wait for any signs of bats. If you see a bird-like animal swooping down and darting through the swarm of insects, you are witnessing a bat eating its dinner! They are actually the world’s greatest built-in pest control because a single bat can consume more than 1,000 mosquitoes in just one night! You can thank them for your comfortable backyards and picnic areas.

Exotic pets have been popular since the domestication of Eurasian gray wolves 15,000 years ago. In fact, animals like sugar gliders, tarantulas, chinchillas, blue lobsters, and even sharks, are common inventory at many local pet stores these days. Although hamsters and parakeets are still available for sale, more and more pet lovers are leaning toward animals that are rare or rarely domesticated.

However, one such animal that you will not find at a local pet store is a bat; but this doesn’t stop certain individuals from still wanting one as a pet. If you have found a stray baby bat, or have been tossing the idea of acquiring a pet bat, it is wise to learn some important information before making any final decisions.

Is it Legal to Have a Pet Bat?

In most states, a person cannot keep a bat as a pet. That is because bats are protected by law on several levels. Not only is the confiscation of bats from the environment highly regulated by the state and federal government, the transferring of bats is also closely governed. For anyone to lawfully handle bats, they require specialized USDA permits and state licenses.

Where Can I Buy a Pet Bat?

You cannot buy a pet bat on the market, legally. If you wanted to purchase a pet bat, you would have to deal with criminals who are breaking the law by selling and distributing state and federally-protected wildlife without the proper permits and permissions.

What Will Happen if I Take a Bat as a Pet?

Not only is it likely that the bat will not survive, you can also be subject to heft fines for breaking state and federal laws. The bat can also pose several health issues, including Rabies, Histoplasmosis, bat mites, lice, and more. A person or pet can contract these diseases and more from contact with a bat or bat droppings.

Can I Trap a Bat for a Pet?

As mentioned, bats are a protected species of wildlife. This means it is unlawful to trap, touch, harm, or kill a bat under any circumstances. If a bat bites you or your pet, your next step is to seek immediate medical treatment; and your second step is to contact a Louisville bat removal company to handle the bat.

What Should I Do if I Find a Stray Bat?

If you have found a lone bat on the ground, your job is to assess the risk it poses to its surroundings. A bat is a safety risk whether it is sick or not; so if you find one that seems stuck or stranded, it is important that the bat is removed as soon as possible by a licensed bat removal specialist. Not only can it potentially harm another person or pet, it can attract other species of wildlife, which can impose additional safety concerns and hazards. Bats Cause a Deadly Disease Called Fibrosing Mediastinitus

For many years, scientists and researchers have warned us about the dangers of bat guano. Bat droppings commonly grow a fungus called histoplasma Capsulatum that releases toxic, transmissible spores into the air. When breathed in, whether by humans or pets, theses fungal spores can cause a dangerous disease called Histoplasmosis. You may have heard of this lung disease by its other monikers, including Spelunker’s Lung, Cave Disease, Ohio Valley Disease, Reticuloendotheliosis,
and Darling’s Disease.

Mild exposure is not likely to cause the disease, as many of us are exposed to these spores at some point in our lives without even knowing it. But long-term exposure will cause Histoplasmosis, which comes with flu-like symptoms very similar to the common cold. Symptoms of this terrible lung disease include fever, coughing, sneezing, and difficulty breathing. And although not contagious, without proper medical treatment, the disease will only continue to worsen and weaken its host.

Fortunately, there is a treatment for Histoplasmosis, as well as vaccines for pets. But we still can’t rest easy, because now we’ve discovered another bat disease we have to worry about, and it’s caused by Histoplasmosis. This disease is called Fibrosing Mediastinitus. Continue reading to learn more about Fibrosing Mediastinitus, and how to prevent exposure in your home.

Fibrosing Mediastinitus

When a person is ill with Histoplasmosis, they may experience a very rare complication of the disease called Fibrosing Mediastinitus. In contrast to the symptoms of Histoplasmosis, Fibrosing Mediastinitus will cause serious complications that can lead to death. The disease essentially constricts the heart and lungs from functioning. Without immediate treatment, it can be fatal. Although very rare, it is a terrible and painful disease for those infected.

If you have bats in or around your property, it is simply not worth the risk of catching any bat-related diseases like Histoplasmosis and Fibrosing Mediastinitus. Be sure to have a professional wildlife contractor inspect and treat your home for nuisance bats. They have the proper tools, training, and resources to provide safe and humane bat removal services at a fair price. Don’t risk it. Hire a bat removal company as soon as possible to get rid of bats in the attic or other areas of your home.

How to Hire a Reputable Bat Removal Company

As soon as you are aware of a bat infestation problem in your home, you should immediately begin looking for a solution. The first place to start would be hiring a professional to remove bats from your home and prevent them from coming back. How do you know which company to trust? Read on to learn what to expect from a reliable bat exclusion company, and signs to avoid when interviewing each business.

Bat Control Contractors

There are certain qualities and services to expect from a reputable bat control company. These services and qualities will speak for the integrity of the business. First, a dependable and trustworthy bat exclusion company should be listed as an accredited member of the BBB, which stands for the Better Business Bureau. This marks them as a reliable and recognized company.

The next quality to look for is experience. Be sure to inquire about their business’s longevity and specialties. What do they specialize in? How long have they been in business? You don’t want to hire a pest control company that doesn’t particularly specialize in bat exclusion. The company of your choice should specialize in bat control and retain the proper equipment and industry knowledge to remove bats and prevent them from coming back. Exterminators that claim they can “remove anything” often use improper equipment and harmful chemicals to kill or catch bats. This is not the right, or safe, approach to bat removal; and bats should never be exterminated because they are assets to our environment and amazing mammals. They just don’t belong in our homes!

Never be afraid to ask about a company’s equipment and practices they use to carry out their services. It is important to know what kind of machines and tools will be used inside your home, as well as, how equipped they are to even do the job correctly. Inquire about their methods and theories on bat removal, if they use a bat trap (which should never be the case), and how they inspect for bat colonies and infestations. This is information you have every right to know before giving your money away.

A great quality to explore in a bat exclusion company is references. Any professional company should have multiple references, testimonials, fan pages, or other sources of customer reviews to prove their merit. Be sure to investigate all these avenues before deciding on a company to trust.

Northern Long-Eared Bats are on the U.S. Threatened Species List

Under the endangered species act, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service added the Northern Long-Eared Bat to the list of threatened species in our country. The ruling when into effect in May of this year.

The difference between “threatened” and “endangered” is significant. A threatened species is predicted to become endangered in the foreseeable future; whereas an endangered species is soon to be extinct.

Although not yet facing extinction, this is a sad year for this incredible species, and we should take some time to learn more about Northern Long-Eared bats and why their populations are facing endangerment.

Northern Myotis

The Northern Long-Eared bat, formally known as Myotis Keenii, is commonly referred to as Northern Myotis or Myotis septentrionalis. It is a small bat native to North America, averaging sizes no more than 3 to 5 inches and weighing no more than an ounce or two. They are primarily found in the Mid to Eastern parts of the country, starting in states like Iowa, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee, down through the Carolinas and even Alabama, and all the way up to Main and Canada.

Northern Long-Eared bats dwell in caves and wooded forests, roosting in trees during the day and searching for food at night. Being nocturnal, they are mostly active during the dusk, evening, and early morning hours, and then rest during the daytime. After a few days, they switch roosting areas, so they are often in search of new shelter at night as well.

As microbats do, they eat a wide variety of small insects, like moths, mosquitos, beetles, flies, gnats, and more. In the fall they migrate to caves and other similar locations to hibernate for the winter in populations of 100 bats or more. Emerging in March or April, Northern Long-Eared bats then breed and raise their young though the spring and summer.

White-Nose Syndrome is to Blame

One of the conclusions scientists and researchers have come to regarding the downfall of the Northern Long-Eared bat is that disease is the threat. White-Nose Syndrome (WNS) is a common disease that spreads easily and quickly among bat populations, and most all bats are at risk of contracting the illness. This disease seems to be the reason why this species of bat have now become a threatened one.

White-Nose Syndrome is a fungal disease that attacks the bat’s skin. It is caused by the fungus Pseudogymnoascus destructans and can be detected by a visible white fungal growth around the wings, snouts, and muzzles of bats; hence the moniker. Assumed to come from Europe, this disease is now wide-spread throughout North America and has wiped out over 5 million bats in just the past four years. White-Nose Syndrome can kill up to 98% of a bat population at a time. It is a serious threat to all species of bat, and mammal as well.

Protect Bats and Your Home

It is important to never harm, kill, catch, or trap bats under any circumstances. Not only are they an imperative part of our natural surrounding Eco-system, it is often against the law to do so anyway. If you have a bat in the attic, or bats around your house, it is best to call a professional wildlife removal company for safe and legal assistance. They use non-lethal methods to exclude bats, prevent future bat problems, and relocate bats to a faraway habitat.

The Best Treatment for Bat Control

Wild bats are commonly found out in the country, or rural areas of Kentucky. But of course, they are frequently spotted in urban city areas too. Where ever your property is located, bats can potentially be a problem, if they haven’t been already. If you want to truly curb bat infestation and activity near your home or building, trust the best and most effective treatment for it: preventative maintenance. Continue reading to learn why prevention is the best method to protecting your investments from nuisance wildlife damage,
and how to get started today.

Bat Prevention Tips

The first place to think about for bat prevention is the exterior of the property. Roof shingles, windows, doors, siding, overhangs, awnings, porches, and more should all be inspected for openings and vulnerabilities. A licensed contractor should be hired to provide professional sealing and repair services to ensure this step is done properly. Once you know your property is adequately sealed from the outside, you can move onto the next phase of bat control and prevention.

There are several products available on the market for nuisance bat control. You can consider trying out some of these devices to see if they can work for you. If they do not seem to add any value, simply return them for a refund. One such device available is an ultrasonic wave machine that use high-pitched sonar emissions to keep bats away. You can also consider a sound machine that emits the sounds of certain predators bats fear.

Aside from home repairs and electronic devices, you can also install automatic lights outside of your property to keep bats from entering your territory. Bats like the dark, so they will stay clear of bright, lit-up areas. By having them set on motion sensors, you can save energy and keep other nuisance wildlife away.

If you live in the country or rural area, try compromising with the local bat population by setting out bat houses far from your home. These are just like bird houses except the opening is at the bottom, allowing bats to fly in and hang from the top. This will not only keep them occupied and away from your living quarters, it can also give licensed exclusionists an advantage when relocating them to a safer habitat.

Call a professional bat removal and control service for problems with bat activity near your home. They retain the proper licensing and training to LEGALLY and safely remove bats and prevent their return. Never try to catch, harm, or kill a wild bat. Call a bat removal service instead! They use safe and non-lethal methods to remove bats and relocate them to a faraway habitat.
